City Winery Hosts The Downtown Seder
Saturday, April 6 2019, 6:00 pm - 11:00 pm
City Winery is known for its concerts, private events, restaurant, bar, and the city’s only fully-functioning urban winery. On April 6th, the Ponce City Market space brings together people from all backgrounds to share in the wisdom and underlying message of hope in the classic story of Jews being led out of slavery.
This non-traditional Seder (ritual feast) incorporates community leaders, activists, artists, politicians, and comedians of diverse faiths and experiences, and both food and wine are included in the ticket price.
City Winery CEO & Founder Michael Dorf began the Downtown Seder tradition 19 years ago at The Knitting Factory New York City, and past participants have included Lou Reed, Dr. Ruth, Judy Gold, and more.
For City Winery Atlanta’s second Seder, the location is proud to have Israeli singer-songwriter David Broza, Ricky McKinnie from The Blind Boys of Alabama, and actress and singer Mira Awad. Many more performers to be announced.
While the tradition of a Passover Seder goes back over 2000 years, City Winery’s unique, artistic, interpretive Seder takes a lot of freedom in dividing the ancient Haggadah into parts and assigning them to various artists, musicians, political thinkers, and activists to present a fluid, thought-provoking, and enjoyable evening.
The themes within the Passover story of liberation struggles, bigotry, racial injustices, and tyrants harboring lethal hatred for outsiders all are represented in the timeless tale.
“The Downtown Seder is being held 13 days prior to the start of Passover so that guests can bring the inspiration from our event into their homes and make their own Seder dinners more relevant,” said City Winery Founder and CEO Michael Dorf.
The City Winery venue is set with long community tables, and food is served with abundant glasses of wine and a customized Haggadah.
Over the two-hour program, all of the customary traditions will be followed, including the drinking of four glasses of wine (produced by City Winery), discussing the four different children, reciting the four questions, and eating a delicious vegetarian meal (kosher option available per request) prepared by City Winery's Executive Chef Mario Manzini.
