A major African golfing fixture since 1981, the Nedbank Golf Challenge - tagged the Millionaire Challenge because of the prize money - takes place annually at Sun City's Gary Player Country Club.
Sun City, South Africa's Las Vegas, used to circumvent the sporting sanctions of the apartheid days by claiming to be part of the semi-autonomous homeland of Bophutatswana. Nowadays it can wear its glitz proudly, and the cream of international golf visits for this tournament.
Since 1999 the Nedbank Golf Challenge has been dominated by two players: South Africa's Ernie Els, who won in 1999, 2000 and 2002 and Spain's Sergio Garcia, who won in 2001 and 2003. However it was a newcomer, making his maiden Nedbank Challenge appearance, who won in 2004. Retief Goosen had to battle not only the rest of the field, but also illness and the fact that his two-week old baby daughter was in hospital in London. The title went to Jim Furyk in 2005, and Furyk became the fifth man to win the Nedbank Golf Challenge back-to-back in 2006. Will he defend his win in 2007? Well, watch this space!
