Arts Alive Festival

The month-long international Arts Alive Festival in Johannesburg marks the beginning of spring in the city with music, dance, theatre and more. Much of the programme is based in the inner-city Newtown Cultural Precinct.
First held in 1991, the festival is now one of the leading cultural events on the African continent. It aims to present world class cultural performances and events as well as educational exchanges between overseas and local artists. It also involves professionals and non-professionals through its educational school touring programme, reaching out to outlying communities such as Soweto and Alexandra.
The 2006 festival included performances by the Afro-Cuban All Stars, British DJ Mr Scruff and the Moving into Dance Mophotong company.
Expect an equally eclectic affair for 2007. Keep an eye on the Arts Alive website for breaking news, not only for the September festival, but also the annual programme and the Women in Arts Festival in August.
