The San Miguel Carnival lasts for the majority of November each year as the city comes alive with dancing and parades to honour its patron saint, the Virgen de la Paz.
On the first day, bands provide the typical early morning wake-up call at 4am, alerting the city's residents to the start of the party. National and international bands and orchestras fill the streets with popular samba, reggae and merengue tunes to which the locals dance non-stop.
The celebrations would not be complete without the choosing of the Carnival Queen, who is paraded about the streets by her dancing admirers, beneath the dangling decorations of coloured paper globes
