The International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam, held in venues throughout the city, is one of the world's leading documentary festivals and annually screens over 180 films in different formats and themed programmes.
Founded in 1998, the festival quickly became an important part of the international circuit for documentary makers. It attracts audiences of around 60,000 each year and is also something of a networking forum for industry types - filmmakers, distributors, financial backers and others.
The festival has three competition programmes - one for the long documentary (exceeding 60 minutes) and one for shorts (60 minutes or less). Both video and film documentaries are eligible for these categories. In the third competition programme, debut films compete for the First Appearance Award.
Another highlight is the Top 10, in which a leading filmmaker chooses his or her favourite documentaries. There is also a special programme, which focuses on countries, persons and/or themes.
