Amsterdam's International Gaudeamus Music Week focuses on a competition for young composers and also features discussions and recitals of works by established composers. The Noord-Hollands Philharmonic Orchestra is the "house" orchestra and concerts take place throughout the week in halls and churches throughout the city.
The event features the work of young composers, with an international jury of established composers selecting the pieces to be performed. After listening to performances of selected scores during the Music Week, the jury then awards the Gaudeamus Prize for the best composition, made up of cash given as a commission for a new composition, to be premièred during Music Week the following year.
