Lillehammer's annual jazz festival fills the autumn darkness with funky tunes and excitement.
This has become one of the most important cultural events of the year in the city. Its agenda is to bring young local artists out of the dark, to connect them to national and international institutions and to encourage cross-pollination of ideas, skills and styles, both between artists and between jazz and other musical forms. It actively seeks to encourage young people to participate in the organisation of the festival as well as to perform.
It's not just idealism, though - the festival puts up a good show, attracting primarily national but also international talent of a very high calibre, for some intense and very enjoyable performances. The vibe is good and the natives enjoy the festival as much as visitors.
