The Wangaratta Festival of Jazz has flourished since its inception and it is now regarded as the best jazz festival in Australia, consistently attracting a great line-up and also incorporating the National Jazz Awards. A wide variety of venues are used, from the prestigious and beautiful Holy Trinity Cathedral to a local cheese factory, the golf course and a couple of wineries, all hosting outdoor performances.
The festival was first held in 1990, the product of a coterie of like-minded jazz buffs who decided to put the town on the map. It hosts performances morning, noon and night and the National Jazz Awards gives young musicians (up to the age of 35) the chance to show off their talents. There are also jazz masterclasses, a series of jazz and blues films and public discussions on the art form.
