Each year, beginning on 8 September, the beautiful town of Tordesillas holds a fun-packed week of celebrations that embraces religious processions and, strange as it sounds, bull running! The weekend kicks off with a candlelit procession by the name of Los Faroles.
Devotees, bearing lanterns, carry out a circuit of the town and local environs, including the local castle grounds. The program continues right up into the small hours. Sunday's celebrations follow with a pilgrimage to the sanctuary of the town's patron saint, la Virgen de la Peña.
The adrenaline does not start to rise until Monday with the early morning bull-running (toro del alba). The bull-running events run from Sunday evening to Thursday. So dangerous is the bull running that the event has long been held outide the town.
If it's the extreme sports you are after, then by all accounts, do not miss the Toro del Vega on the Tuesday. Participants, either on foot or horseback, are given a set time in which to spear a maddened bull. It's rare that the bull survives. So, if you are unable to stomach this then stick solely to the religious events! It is not uncommon to see the odd participant being impaled as well as the bull.
